A warm welcome to Flint High School!
Croeso i Ysgol Uwchradd Fflint!
We are very much looking forward to your child joining us in Year 7 and we thank you very much for choosing our school.
The transition from primary to secondary school is a very important time for your child and we want to work with you to help make the move as smooth as possible.
This year the induction days are the 25th and 26th of June. This is when your child will spend time at Flint High School having lessons, meeting teachers and of course other students. Each student will be in a form with a form tutor, who will look after their welfare and will be the first point of call regarding school matters. We will make arrangements for the canteen at that time to take thumbprints so that everything is ready for cashless catering in September. For the transition days pupils should wear their own school uniform and bring with them basic equipment (pen/pencil/ruler, etc). The Parents’ Information Evening will be Wednesday the 24th of June at 6.00pm.
Mrs C Jones will be visiting all local primary schools over the coming weeks. The purpose of the visit will be to introduce herself to your child and speak to the class teacher so that we know as much about your child as possible beforehand.
On the Parents’ Information Evening, you will be given a booklet containing a list of uniform. This can be purchased from Monkhouse and the ‘New starter hub’ is now available on the Monkhouse website. Alternatively you can telephone on 0161 476 7216 or Email: web@monkhouse.com
If your child has free school meals or is a looked after child you may be able to access grant funding. Please visit https://gov.wales/pupil-development-grant-access
If your child has a universal free school meals entitlement at their primary school then this will continue here for the transition days. On the transition days, there will be a hot meal deal, a cold food meal deal and a vegetarian option available. Students can also bring in a packed lunch if they choose to do so.
Our school day starts at 8.40am, your child will be met in the school car park by a member of staff. The school day finishes at 3.10pm and students will be dismissed from reception at this time.
P & O Lloyd operate the coaches to Flint High School and the induction days’ transport will be provided by them (if you are not bringing your child or your child is walking to school). The bus stops and approximate times to be at the bus stop are listed below. Please aim to be at the bus stop earlier than the stated times. Biometrics System
Cashless catering service for the purchase of food in the school dining hall only.
The Protection of Freedoms Act 2012
This legislation requires schools to:
Inform parents about the biometric system in the school and explain what application uses biometrics.
Biometrics is used in the school dining hall only for the purchase of food. This is done by a scanning system where students can load money onto their account via finger scanning, this then enables the student to purchase food.
Receive written permission from one parent if the school is to continue processing biometrics for their child.
The school will not use the biometric information for any purposes other than that stated above. The school will store the biometric information collected securely in compliance with the Data Protection Act 1998. The school will not share this information with anyone else and will not unlawfully disclose it to any other person.
If you do not wish your child to use the biometric system, we will provide reasonable alternative arrangements that allow them to access current and future services, for example a PIN number. If a PIN number is provided, it is the student’s responsibility to ensure that they keep this number safe at all times.
Please note that when he/she leaves the school, or if for some reason he/she ceases to use the biometric system, his/her biometric data will be permanently deleted.
If you would like to discuss this in more details, please speak to the school.
Internet Access and Safety Policy
As part of the school’s Information and Communications Technology (ICT) curriculum, we offer students access to the Internet as part of supervised classes in computer rooms.
The teaching staff and supervisors do their best to regulate access sensibly. Parents should be warned, However, that the Internet is a virtual world and, as in the real world, it is occasionally possible for students to come across unsuitable material which parents may not wish their children to see or which contravenes the ethical code of the school. These are the rules we are asking students to follow:
· I will only use ICT systems in school, including the internet, email, digital video, mobile technologies, etc, for school purposes.
· I will not download or install software on school technologies.
· I will only log on to the school network/ learning platform with my own user name and password.
· I will follow the school’s ICT security system and not reveal my passwords to anyone and change them regularly.
· I will only use my school email address.
· I will make sure that all ICT communications with students, teachers or others are responsible and sensible.
· I will be responsible for my behaviour when using the Internet. This includes resources I access and the language I use.
· I will not deliberately browse, download, upload or forward material that could be considered offensive or illegal. If I accidentally come across any such material I will report it immediately to my teacher.
· I will not give out any personal information such as name, phone number or address. I will not arrange to meet someone unless this is part of a school project approved by my teacher.
· I will ensure that my online activity, both in school and outside school, will not cause my school, the staff, students or others distress or bring the school or individuals into disrepute.
· I will not participate in any form of cyber-bullying, either in school or outside school.
· I will support the school approach to online safety and not deliberately take, upload or add any images, video, sounds or text that could upset or offend any member of the school community
· I will respect the privacy and ownership of others’ work on-line at all times.
· I will not attempt to bypass the internet filtering system.
· I understand that all my use of the Internet and other related technologies can be monitored and logged and can be made available to my teachers.
· I will make it clear when submitting work or course-work and using the internet where my sources have come from; I will not copy and paste and claim it is my work.
· I understand that these rules are designed to keep me safe and that if they are not followed, school sanctions will be applied and my Parent/ Carer may be contacted.
Hwb - Welsh Learning Platform
The Hwb platform provides all maintained schools in Wales with access to a wide range of centrally-funded, bilingual digital tools and resources to support the digital transformation of classroom practices. The Hwb platform is managed and operated by the Welsh Government.
All learners in maintained schools in Wales must be provided with a secure login to the Hwb platform. This is because mandatory reading and numeracy tests, currently on paper, will be moving online and must be completed by each learner via the platform. In order to provide your child with a secure login, the school will be sending basic information to the Welsh Government. The login will allow your child to take the mandatory online assessments, known as ‘personalised assessments’.
You will receive your child’s log in when they become available in a separate letter.
For more information about the Hwb platform and how information about your child is used, please see https://hwb.gov.wales/privacy.
For more information about the online personalised assessments, please see http://learning.gov.wales/resources/collections/national-reading-and-numeracy-tests?lang=en#collection-2
If you agree, Welsh Government can also provide your child with access, via the Hwb platform, to a variety of additional services which are provided by other organisations. These include online learning environments such as Hwb Classes, Microsoft Office 365, Google for Education, and other relevant educational tools and resources.
Welsh Government is making these additional services available to help your child access educational resources. These additional services are centrally funded and there is no cost for you or for your school to access and use them.
