Name: Sharon Hensel
Job title: Youth Engagement Tutor
Company: North Wales Training
Please describe what your job typically involves:
My job involves setting up programmes for Schools and a Military Awareness Course that we run.
Why did you want to do this job, what inspired you?
I love being given a challenge and like that the students can achieve a qualification and prospective career from the course.
What qualifications do you need for this job?
I have worked in education for many years and trained whilst doing my job. It’s here that I gained many of my qualifications however I have served in the military and gained experience and qualifications from them too.
Did you go to college, university, or did you do an apprenticeship or other form of training?
I did training through work and gained certificates in courses which I completed.
Are you required to do ongoing training?
Yes we are, I am currently doing Level 4 in Advice and Guidance. We also do online training.
Have you always done this job or have you changed career? What did you do before?
I worked in a PRU unit (Pupil Referral Unit) which is a school specifically organised to provide education for children who are excluded, sick, or otherwise unable to attend a mainstream school.
What do you like most about your job?
The students benefiting from the course and them enjoying it.
Are there any downsides?
There can be downsides if the weather is bad as we do outdoor activities as well.
What advice would you give to a young person, who wanted to do a similar job, about how to get started?
Keep on listening in school, get good grades, and ask for help/advice if need. Always think to yourself “I can do this”.
What do you like to do when you’re not at work?
I train puppies/dogs, I’m also an adult instructor in the Army Cadet Force, so always busy doing things and working with young people; I do like chill out times!
Any other information
I believe that anyone can achieve success if they put their mind to it. I look after students from high school who are completing our course and I am determined that they will gain a qualification from attending with me.
