There’s plenty going on in the Learning Zone at lunch times, see below for a taster of what’s on offer. To find out more about any of these activities, please drop in and speak to Mrs Blakesley.
Chess Club On Fridays, it’s chess club and this is open to all year groups. Whether you’ve never played before or you are quite an expert, this is a great way to enjoy the game and meet new friends – there are already 50 members so, even if you come on your own, you are bound to find a chess partner. You can also try a new variation of the game, three player chess, where the board has ninety six squares! Then there’s floor chess and, soon to be introduced, chocolate chess – yum! |
A Reading Club with a Difference If you’re a year 8 student, this new reading club is perfect for you and specially designed to give you an exciting multi-media reading experience! Firstly, you will be invited to attend a ‘book tasting’ event held in the school’s café where you will get to choose a different genre of book for starters, mains and desert. After reading specially printed extracts for each ‘course’, you can discuss your choices and complete a mini review, giving a star rating of your experience. Next up is ‘The Departure Lounge’. You’ll start off with an audio book, then get to play a special adaptation of Jenga, where questions about the book have been pasted onto the blocks for you to discuss and debate. You’ll also watch films of the books, and use the Reading Cloud to chat and debate with others. This is a fun way to explore all types of books, and find out what you enjoy and what interests you - as well as helping you to develop your vocabulary. Definitely worth a look! |
Film Club Film Club is held on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays and is a hugely popular lunchtime activity with all year groups. You’ll watch some great films, discuss your opinions with other members, and write reviews if you want to! Several students have won amazing prizes for their reviews from Into Film, the national education charity. From time to time, there will also be a chance to meet special guests from the world of film, and take part in film-making workshops as well as other events and activities specially organised for the club. |
