Safeguarding

Flint High School recognises the moral and statutory responsibility to safeguard and promote the welfare of all children. We recognise the importance of providing an ethos and environment within our school that will help children to feel safe, secure and respected; encourage them to talk openly; and enable them to feel confident that they will be listened to. We are alert to the signs of abuse and neglect and follow our procedures to ensure that children receive effective support, protection and justice.

Our school core safeguarding principles are:

  • All children have a right to be protected from all forms of abuse and discrimination and to be treated equally regardless of age, gender, racial origin, culture, religious belief, language, disability or sexual identity
  • All children have a right to be heard and to have their wishes and feelings taken into account
  • All staff understand safe professional practice and adhere to our code of conduct and other associated policies
  • All staff have a responsibility to recognise vulnerability in children and act on any concern in accordance with this policy.

There are three main elements to our safeguarding policy:

  • Prevention through the teaching and pastoral support offered to pupils;
  • Procedures for identifying and reporting cases, or suspected cases, of abuse.  Because of our day-to-day contact with children, school staff are well placed to observe the outward signs of abuse;
  • Support to those pupils who may have been abused.

Safeguarding policy applies to all staff and volunteers working in Flint High school and its governors.  It is recognised by this school that staff that come into contact with children can often be the first point of disclosure for a child.  This first point of contact is an important part of the child protection process and it is essential that all staff are aware of and implement our school procedures.

Head Teacher - Is responsible for ensuring that safeguarding / child protection policies and procedures adopted by the governing body are fully implemented and followed by all staff and are kept up-to-date.

Assistant Head  - Is the Designated Senior Person (DSP) and is responsible for overseeing all pupil support work and co-ordinating links with external agencies.

Learning Managers – Each year in the school has a Learning Manager, who monitors and tracks the attainment and efforts of the learners in their care. They support learners with any aspect of life they require support with. They support schoolwork, but also support learners’ wellbeing. They work closely with families.

Student Services – Pastoral Support staff support Learning Managers to maintain the well-being of students.

ALN Coordinator – If your child has additional learning needs, the ALN Co-ordinator is responsible for supporting and producing an individual development plan. The ALN Co-ordinator works closely with parents and external agencies to ensure the best possible provision for the learners. High Potential Students (HPS) pupils also receive consideration. Teaching assistants will support where appropriate.

Form Tutors – Each child will attend a 20-minute registration period each morning with their form tutor. Important relationships will be established, and a great deal of moral, emotional and academic support work shared.

PSE – Every student receives Personal and Social Education;  we ensure that the content of the lessons is purposeful and supports the needs of the curriculum and the pupils of Flint High School.

External Agencies – To ensure the best quality support for your child, we will work with a variety of external agencies. These can support us and families to deal with situations that arise in the most appropriate way.
